Music Program FAQs

What skills do I need to succeed in this major?
Success as a music major is built on a foundation of personal habits, hard work, and dedication. Students who thrive in our program tend to bring organizational skills, curiosity, focus, and most importantly a growth mindset. Students that have a desire to make connections between what they are learning and what they put into practice tend to be the most successful candidates.

How will I know if this major fits me?
We offer three degrees in music: the Bachelor of Arts in Music, the Bachelor of Music in Performance, and the Bachelor of Music Education. All three programs immerse students in a supportive community of musicians. If you love to perform and are energized by the discipline of refining your craft, the Performance degree may be the right fit for you. If you have a genuine desire to inspire young minds and find joy in sharing music with others, we encourage you to explore Music Education. If you are looking for a broad, flexible degree that allows you to connect music with other interests, the Bachelor of Arts may be a great path to consider.

What can I expect to learn?
Our program is designed to develop you as a complete musician – technically, intellectually, and personally. All degrees are built around core music knowledge (music history, music theory, applied lessons, and aural skills). You will have the opportunity to participate in ensembles and chamber groups as well as student-led organizations that can expand your leadership and creative potential. Our faculty will meet you where you are and help you reach your potential.

Will I have opportunities for hands-on learning experiences?
All of our degrees require participation in ensembles and chamber groups. In these groups, students have the opportunity to develop leadership and communication skills, and growth as a contributing member of the ensemble. Bachelor of Music Education students also have the opportunity to experience student teaching and observations in the public school classroom.

What are CMU students who graduated with this degree doing now?
The Swinney Conservatory has a strong tradition of successful alumni. Over the past 100 years, we have seen our graduates succeed in many occupations: leading band programs, leading church music programs, directing choirs, pursuing graduate school, performing in military bands, and working with opera companies (to name just a few). What sets our graduates apart is not only their academic excellence and their musical experiences, but their commitment to service—using music to inspire, connect, and uplift others. This reflects not only our programmatic emphasis on achievement and personal growth, but also the University’s Mission.
