Prison Ed Scholarship

Only students in the CMU Prison Education Program who are incarcerated at the beginning of the academic term are eligible for the Prison Ed Scholarship. These students receive scholarships up to the amount of tuition and fees.  Other funding sources can be applied to cover student billing, such as Pell, SEOG, MO Access Grant, and Fast Track Grant.

Per Department of Education regulations, incarcerated students are not eligible to receive a refund from any type of financial aid, so all funding requests are only up to the amount of the cost of attendance. Excess funding is removed and returned to the funding source. Students are also not eligible to apply for or receive federal education loans while incarcerated.

If a student is released in the middle of an academic semester, their Prison Ed Scholarship is continued until the end of that semester, and then they are transitioned to the CGES cost of attendance. Students who have been released from incarceration for the entire duration of an academic term are not eligible for the scholarship.  Once released, students will become eligible for federal education loans and refunds immediately assuming they have met other eligibility requirements set forth by the Department of Education.

As students are preparing to be released, they may be eligible to purchase a laptop from CMU to continue their studies, but individuals will be billed for this expense; it is not included in the Prison Ed Scholarship award.
