Reference Services

Our reference staff is available to assist patrons with all their information needs. For assistance, inquire at the circulation desk near the library entrance, or email us with your questions. Do not hesitate to ask the staff if you have questions regarding library services or other information needs.

Information Literacy and Instruction

Information literacy means much more than just knowing how to read a book or operate a computer. The Smiley Memorial Library Information Literacy Program integrates library instruction into many courses here at CMU. A library tour or specialized instruction session can be beneficial in improving library skills and overall achievement in academics. Some information literacy resources can also be found under Subject Guides.

Course Reserve Materials

Materials such as books, textbooks, articles, videos, solution sets, and exams that an instructor has selected for use by students enrolled in a specific course are placed "on reserve" at Smiley Memorial Library. Over due fines for reserve materials: $.10 per hour for hourly checkouts, $2.00 per day for daily and overnight checkouts.

Practice Test Service

Smiley Memorial Library is pleased to offer its patrons, a practice test service. Learning Express provides immediate scoring, complete answer explanations, and an individualized analysis of your results all free of charge when accessed through our website.

Juvenile Literature and Curriculum Collection

The juvenile literature and curriculum collection are located on the 2nd floor of the library in the newly renovated Baskett Teacher Education Center. This collection contains children's books, from early childhood to young adult, as well as curriculum aids, workbooks, and manipulatives. Fines of $.10 per day accrue for overdue items.

Popular DVD Collection

The library houses an ever-growing popular DVD collection, funded by the SGA. Titles are chosen with input from the students. You may check out two titles and keep for three days. Fines of $.10 per day accrue for overdue items. Come checkout this free service!!

Coffee Bar

Located near the entrance of the library in the Head Family Room, our coffee bar offers patrons fresh brewed coffee, hot chocolate, spiced cider, herbal tea and flavored tea. In addition, the library offers some snack and breakfast items for purchase. All proceeds from the Coffee and snack bar support library programs.

Computers and other Equipment

Located on every floor of the library are PC's equipped with Microsoft Office 365 as well as networked printers. Some equipment available for patron use are headphones, CD players, and record players (please inquire at the circulation desk). Other equipment available is listed below.

Kindle E-Readers

The library has four Kindle e-readers available for three day checkout. There are a multitude of popular and academic titles available in Smiley Library's Kindle collection.

Video Game Systems

Each group study room in the Information Commons is equipped with a Wii console. The library also has a selection of classic game emulator consoles and games, including Nintendo and Sega Genesis. Equipment must be checked out from the circulation desk and used in the library. Additional games will be added as funding permits, but you are welcome to bring in your own games.

Digital Cameras

Digital cameras are available for checkout to students, faculty and staff. These cameras may be checked out at the front desk of the library with a photo id.

Checkout Period: 24 hours, not available after 8 p.m. Fines: $15 per day

Laptop Computers

Two wireless laptops are available for checkout to students, faculty and staff. Come to the circulation desk located near the library entrance to inquire about availability. The patron must present a driver's license or other government issued photo id that will be kept for the duration of the checkout period.

Checkout Period: Two hours, in library use only. Not available after 8 p.m. Fines: $2 per hour.
